Photo of the Day (March 19th, 2019)

The yellow feet of a Snowy Egret is a giveaway for identifying it. I’m not very good at identifying birds in the wild usually, but I am getting better. These little tips help a lot.

Northern Mockingbirds are quite common here in California, but I never saw them in Minnesota. It has been very nice to see all sorts of new birds since I moved here.

I love the way a Black Phoebe sits just over a small pond and makes quick jumps out to get insects. It’s very cool to watch! This photo doesn’t show that, but I love the bright colors in the background.

I love the pose of this Yellow-rumped Warbler. Sometimes their colors are hard to see or muted, but this one was bright and on full display.

These colorful birds are one of the easiest to find out in the wild. A very loud bird who is not afraid of humans. They travel in small groups, constantly talking to one another. The California Scrub-jay is slightly different than the Western Scrub-jay, and is usually separated by the Sierra Nevada mountain range.

What I love about this photo is the detail in the feathers as well as the water reflected sun rays. One of my favorite shots of that day!

This Western Bluebird was posing for me on that branch when it suddenly jumped down and flew away. I barely caught this striking bird as it took off. One of my favorites from that day. Links to the gallery and video below.

This European Starling has some serious balance! It was fun watching him poke his head in to get some good treats and back out.

Photo of the Day (February 21st, 2019)

After taking the photo of the silhouetted tree, I was watching these hawks fly back and forth over the parking lot. It was far too dark to get a proper exposure of them, so I tried to capture a silhouette with the sunrise color behind them. It turned out very well! One of my favorites from this day.
